How important is it to keep a positive perspective? It’s a popular topic on the self-help and self development circuit as one of the keys to long term happiness (or at least contentment). There have also been a lot of scientific studies – in this article on the benefits of positive thinking from the Mayo Clinic it’s pretty key, a positive outlook will help reduce stress, help you live longer and be healthier overall…all in all not a bad deal!

As a business owner, staying positive is even more important…especially considering the alternative. You’ve got plenty of things to worry about – starting with finances, people, competition…overall it’s a long list. Now picture the difference of approaching these issues with a positive perspective and outlook versus a negative outlook? With a positive approach, anything is possible and problems can be solved. With a negative approach, everything is an issue and soon it all feels very overwhelming – it would be much easier to throw in the towel if you’re approaching things negatively.

It might sound a little touchy feely, but I can tell you that it impacts a lot of business owners that I talk to. The idea is summarized nicely in one of my favorite songs from The Shins – Young Pilgrims:

“But I learned fast how to keep my head up ’cause I
Know there is this side of me that
Wants to grab the yoke from the pilot and just
Fly the whole mess into the sea.” – The Shins

I think we all fight our own demons from time to time, but there is a real upside to keeping your head up – when you can open up and look at the possibilities you’ll be surprised at the great ideas and solutions you can come up with.

So positive thinking can impact your results (as I’ve written before)…it’s a wonderful, important thing to do, but what if you’re just not wired that way? It’s not like you can just flip a switch and start thinking positively. How you think / your approach to things is a habit and it will require some changes if you’re going to be able to make being positive stick.

Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

Be aware of your thoughts

A good place to start would be to simply start raising your awareness of what your thoughts are…how often are you thinking and talking to yourself in a negative way? This is especially important because it turns our your brain is physically wired to reinforce whatever you’re thinking on a regular basis – check out points #2 and #3 from this great list of 30 Amazing Facts About Your Brain from Tim Brownson. You tend to get more of whatever you think, so if you’re being negative, it’s easier to be negative the next time around.

Question? When you talk to yourself (in your head) are you positive or negative?

Give some serious thought to who you spend time with

Jim Rohn has a famous quote:

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

If you’re hanging out with people who are inherently negative, you’re going to be negative as well. Attitudes (along with success or failure) are contagious – it may be time to consider cleaning up your tribe (easier said than done, but it could have a huge impact on you).

Question? Are the people you spend the most time with challenging you and helping you get better…or are they holding you back?

Start reframing when you notice potentially negative situations

Reframing is simply the conscious act of changing your perspective on something (an event, an outcome, a person, etc.). Typically what ever we’re looking at or talking about isn’t inherently good or bad, it depends on how we frame our perception…and you can choose that frame. Tim Brownson also has a good article on Reframing and how to use it.

Question? Do you consciously look at a situation or an outcome and find a way to reframe it in a more positive light? Could you?

There are a lot of other ways to impact your outlook – exercise can be a great way to lift your mood…a lot of people recommend some form of meditation…listen to positive music, read positive books or magazines, watch uplifting movies or shows.

How important is positive thinking to you? When you’re trying to stay (or get) positive, what works best for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts – share them in the comments below.

One of the things we work on with our clients and business owners is developing systems for their business. It’s critical to build a systematic approach, figuring out the best way to do something and making sure it’s done that same way consistently…regardless of who’s doing the work. Often the easiest way to rollout that kind of systematic thinking is to develop a checklist.

I just finished reading The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande. It’s a great read and a lot more entertaining that I thought it would be. Gawande is a medical doctor who decided to investigate the effectiveness of Checklists and how if they could be applied to the medical profession.

My experience with doctors is that they traditionally aren’t great writers or story tellers (although to be fair, I would much rather they be great doctors first…). Having said that, Dr. Gawande writes in a way that makes it very easy to read, telling several stories to help illustrate his points.

He begins by clarifying the difference between errors of ignorance (when we don’t know enough) and errors of ineptitude (when we don’t use what we know properly) Then he leads you through the findings of his research he accumulated while writing the book.

He started with the aviation industry and Boeing…where they have championed the idea of effective checklists for over 75 years. It’s not by accident the chance of dying in a plane crash is 1 in 25 Million. If there is the potential for something to happen in the air, chances are pretty good there is a checklist nearby the pilots will be able to refer to.

What his book points out is that it isn’t that people don’t know what to do. It is that it’s almost impossible to be prepared on your own…to know what to do under any circumstance without a framework to refer to. He isn’t discounting anyone’s knowledge; it is having a guideline that keeps you from missing the obvious.

If you are a fan of Van Halen, you will learn the real reason that David Lee Roth requested all the brown M & M’s be removed from their candy dishes back stage. It had nothing to do with his ego. Another great story is Walmart’s ability to respond after Katrina flooded New Orleans. Both stories driven by the power of using checklists in creative ways.

Building a checklist doesn’t have to be overly complex – here are the 3 high level steps:

Development => Drafting => Validation

A couple of the take-a-ways on building a checklist is to keep it simple and talk in the language of the people who will be reading it. He even provides a Checklist for Checklists to help guide you through the process. Obviously he’s a pretty methodical thinker…but he’s also an interesting guy – check out this interview he did with Stephen Colbert to get a better feel for why he’s so interested in this topic (and why it makes sense for you as well).

Could you implement some checklists?

The challenge with implementing Checklist with professionals in any industry is that you risk insulting their intelligence because they feel they already know all “the stuff”. Why do they need a list? I guess, that may be a question to ask the 155 people of Flight 1549 who landed safely on the Hudson River on Jan. 14th, 2009.

As you start the New Year are there areas in your business where using a simple Checklist could reduce the chance for errors? If you need some help, don’t be afraid to ask. If you already use Checklists in your business, I would love to hear some success stories – share them below.

If you’re like a lot of business owners and entrepreneurs that I’ve talked to recently…you’re feeling pretty tired. One guy described it as feeling stretched thin. Worn out, dragging, physically and mentally drained…and all for good reasons! Let’s face it, for most of us the last 2…maybe even 3 years have been challenging in many ways.

However it’s a new year and NOW is the absolute best time to start making great things happen for yourself. (And if you’re worried…even a little bit…that 2012 is the end of the world, the super smart folks at NASA can reassure you there’s nothing to worry about!). The way I look at it, you’ve always got two choices, you can stress and fret and let the world beat up on you, or you can choose to go out and build your own future.

Where to start? Here are a few ideas that will help you kick off the New Year the right way.

Play to your strengths

As a business owner you have to wear a lot of hats, everything from IT support to accounting and customer service. Early on you didn’t have a choice, you do pretty much everything, but as you grow and find some success you have to find other answers or you will collapse under the work.

If your goal is to grow your business and get more enjoyment out of it, then you have to start playing to your strengths. When you’re focusing on things you’re really good at, everything seems easy and time flies. When you’re spending time on things you’re not particularly good it, it’s a struggle and no fun.

What are the 1 or 2 things about your business that you absolutely love? The parts where you make a huge difference? What would it take to have you start spending more time on those aspects of your business?

Conversely, what are the 1 or 2 things about your business that you dread doing or just don’t do very well? What would it take to delegate or outsource that work? Yes it might cost you some money, but that will be more than offset by the gains you’ll have from investing that time and effort into your strengths.

Focus – what’s most important right now?

One of the reasons you’re feeling tired is that you’re trying to do too much. Too many things are at the top of your list as critical items. You work hard, but because you’re spreading your time and attention across 10…maybe even 20 different activities, you’re not getting anything done. Which would make anyone feel tired! It’s time to start thinking about doing less!

Take a hard look at what you want to achieve this year. Out of all the things you could spend your time on, what are the top 5 things you could do that would make the biggest difference to your business? That list might include eliminating a constraint (i.e. hiring more help, streamlining processes). That list might include generating more leads and opportunities (developing a marketing plan, more purposeful networking, emphasizing specific marketing tactics).

Whatever you think it is – write down your top 5 priorities for the year and and focus on getting those 5 things done.

It can be really difficult to prioritize and narrow down your list, but I guarantee you will see a lot more progress and feel better about it if you can stick with a focused approach.

Give

When you’re trying to make things happen, it’s easy to fall into a taker’s mentality. To focus on what you need from other people in order to win. Here’s the thing…it’s completely counter-intuitive, but if you really want to succeed, your best bet (and shortest path) is to focus on how you can help others out first.

You build fans, friends, relationships and referral partners by helping people out. You should always be giving value. Find out what someone needs…and then help them get it!

Try this – identify those people who could be great connections for you and figure out how you can help them. Don’t ask for anything in return, honestly go in with a giving mentality. (Read the Go-Giver if you want some inspiration on this idea). Not only will you feel good about yourself, but you will be surprised at the unexpected doors that open because of your efforts.

Reflect and be grateful for today’s gift…

It can be really difficult to find perspective…the big picture that helps propel you in a positive way through good days and bad. If you’re just treading water and not looking at the big picture…not consistently thinking about why you do what you do, then it’s going to be exhausting.

Conversely, if you can get into a mindset of purpose and meaning, a lot of things start falling into place. Obviously you have to find your own answers, but this short TED video from Louie Schwarzberg might give you some ideas. Check out Nature. Beauty. Gratitude. for a lift.

There are plenty of days when things are going wrong that you’re not likely to feel grateful, but imagine if you could carry that feeling around all the time…pretty powerful stuff.

Challenge

Here’s my challenge to you – give the 4 ideas above a real shot in the next few weeks. Spend time thinking about and implementing them into your life and business. Then let me know if you can sense a difference in your progress and how you feel about it.

Every now and then you get handed a slow week – usually the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, but sometimes you’ll get a quiet week other times during the year. Maybe you’ve officially taken the whole week off – which is great! However if you’re like most business owners, you’re ‘working’ this week, you’ve just planned it to be slow.

Slow doesn’t have to mean unproductive though – here are a few ideas of what to focus on to make sure it’s a great slow week and not just…well, slow!

Finish your planning

Planning is a four letter word for most entrepreneurs – it runs counter to your instincts…and for most of us it’s just not any fun. But if you want to succeed, you need to at least go through a planning process. It doesn’t have to be complicated – try this:

Identify your top 5 priorities for the next year…if you could get these 5 things done / achieved / etc. you’d make it a great year!

Identify at least 2 or 3 key targets you want to hit – usually one of them is revenue, but it could also be profits, number of new clients, some sort of quality metric. The key is to make sure it’s something easy to measure and it’s a valid, important measure of your business success.

Finally – with the above in mind, identify the top 5 (or so) things you need to get done in the next 90 days. What will move the ball forward? What’s achievable? Be specific and layout at least a framework of how you’ll do what you’d do.

Make a list of people to contact

Your long term success is also going to be driven by the company you keep…and if you don’t make time to stay in touch, you’ll lose out on a lot of opportunities.

Make a top 20 list of business (and some personal) contacts who are likely to either refer you business or be a great contact for you in some other way. Once you’ve got a good list, make a commitment to meet with someone on the list at least weekly. Relationships only get built when you spend quality time with people.

Take a nap!

It’s a slow week, take some time and give yourself permission to relax a little bit. Seriously…when was the last time you took a nap (and being sick doesn’t count). You’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel after a quality nap.

Clean off your desk

There have been tons of studies that prove that clutter on your desk, in your office causes stress…and with that stress you’re going to be a lot less productive. Don’t believe me? Try doing a great cleanup job on your desk…and let me know if you don’t feel way better about what you’re doing afterwards.

My experience is that it’s like a weight coming off your shoulders…one that you didn’t know you were carrying!

Hang out with family and friends

This one’s obvious – the reason you planned a ‘slow’ week in the first place was to build in some time to relax, but if you’re like most business owners, life often gets in the way of your plans. An important email comes in, you get some phone calls you have to handle, you just remembered a commitment that had to be done…before you know it the week’s up and you didn’t spend any time with those most important to you.

Don’t let that happen. On your slow week…make sure you build in hard stops and walls for your business activities…and give yourself some quality time away.

What are the most important things you do on a slow week? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below, especially if you’re just relaxing around this week!

It’s a simple idea…the best ideas always are. 2 people can accomplish more than 1 person on their own, but the real trick is that 2 people working together can accomplish a LOT more than 1 person…or even 2 people working independently. Bottom line, if you want to achieve more, you’ve got to have teamwork…and teamwork starts with leadership.

Joe Calhoon would describe it as the critical importance of having everyone On The Same Page, which is also the title of one of his books.

I was fortunate to hear Joe speak at an event last week and he covered a lot of important ideas – I don’t have the room to cover the entire talk, but here are a few of the key points that really stood out to me.

You’ve got to have a plan!

Only about 12% of businesses take the time to put together a written business growth plan…and it’s no coincidence that those businesses perform much better than their peers who are reacting and drifting.

The thing is – the plan doesn’t have to be overly complicated. You don’t need a 40 page executive summary in front of a 200 page business plan. Joe advocates a 1 page plan and I’ve worked with clients on 2 page plans. What’s really important is that you’ve gone through a planning process and you can easily communicate what’s important and how you’re getting there.

Employee Engagement will make or break you!

According to studies, about 28% of employees are actively engaged in their work. An engaged employee is one who fully buys into what you’re doing and proactively does what’s needed to help the business be successful…the kind of employees you want and need to have if you are going to make it, much less thrive.

Conversely 50% to 60% are disengaged…which matches up with a study I found earlier this year that over 50% of employees are very unhappy with their job. Disengaged employees show up to work most of the time, do the bare minimum to keep their job and generally avoid any kind of proactive or creative endeavors. It’s an awful existence for the employee (imagine coming in every day to a job you hate) and it’s even worse for the business owner.

The difference between a business with a high level of engagement and a typical business is night and day. It’s the difference between dragging a heavy weight behind you and having a supercharged engine help you push up the hill!

Keep it simple!

The other thing that really resonated with me was the need for leaders and business owners to keep it simple. We live in a complex world…and it’s getting more complex every day, but complexity confuses…complexity keeps people from taking action…complexity doesn’t get talked about (at least not in a positive way).

Simplicity doesn’t mean dumbing things down, simplicity is about finding the core idea, the MOST important things and keeping the focus on that. I love the idea of being able to tell people what you’re all about in 1 or 2 sentences…even better 10 words or less. Try it – it’s not easy, but it is amazingly powerful if you can get there.

Thanks Joe

Joe covered lots of other important ideas and I would strongly encourage you to catch him at a future speaking engagement if you get the chance…and until then, check out one of his books and start thinking about how you could get your team on the same page!

Have you heard Joe speak? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
