Dear Shawn,

Welcome to the latest edition of the Aspirations Newsletter - Thanks for reading and feel free to share with others.
"Here is Edward Bear coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump on the back of his head behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming down stairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it."
-A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
Recent studies show that 94% of the people in the U.S. shop online (we're in 8th place in the world)!  By contrast, only about 1/2 of all small businesses even have a website, much less one that's effective.

As a small business owner you know there's another way, that it's critical to get an effective online presence - but how do you do that without spending a fortune?  What works?  What's important?  Where do you go from here?

The first thing to do is to sign up for my workshop on August 21st - How To Market Online.  It's a 2 hour interactive session that will cover 5 straightforward strategies that can get you found.  The room only holds 20 people or so and the last workshop sold out, so sign up now!!!

The next thing to do is to read the articles below!  ;-)

Also - pay attention to the recommended book this month, it's really worthwhile (not that the others aren't, but this one really stands out)!

I help small business owners that are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated or just not sure what their next step should be to grow their business.  If you know of someone that fits the bill, I would love to meet them - I'll even buy the coffee!!!

Have a great day and I hope to talk to you soon!

Are you Scared of Online Marketing?
It's easy to learn the basics and avoid scary encounters!

Scary!A friend of mine recently had a scary encounter with an online marketing company.

My friend knows (and I'm sure you do as well) that it's more important than ever to get online, but many of the 'professionals' out there present very scary (and expensive options).

The good news is that there are a lot of options and many of them aren't that expensive and can make a huge difference.

How to start thinking locally!
Local Marketing is the way for people to find you.
 Union Station - local marketing
Your prospects are looking for you on the Internet.

They're searching using terms that make sense to them (based on the problem they're having or a common solution to their problem).

For a lot of products or services, they are only interested in a local service provider - they're doing a local search.

They're probably using Google, although they may be using Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN or even AOL.

Although traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is important - if you've got a local business, setting yourself up for Local Search is even more important!  Can you be found locally?

The Big Five for Life - John Strelecky

Have you ever had the experience of suddenly having a new insight into something?  Big Five For Life

It could be during a heated conversation when you suddenly understand where the other person is coming from (and why they're mad) or sometimes you can 'have the lights turned on' when you're listening to a particularly talented speaker.

It only took 15 pages into The Big Five for Life by John Strelecky for me to hit on a new way of looking at something.  This is a book that's billed as a story about the greatest business leader to ever live and the 'secret' to his success.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design and was originally created back in 1984 as a conference for interesting people in those fields to get together and share ideas.

The invited attendees are challenged to share their insights, knowledge and talents in 18 minute speeches and to uphold the following mission:

We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we're building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.

Check it out and be inspired, informed and amused!
