Principal Connections KC
I had the chance to go to a great monthly networking event last week called Principal Connections.

It was hosted at the Bonefish Grill in Leawood and is a charitable Benefit for Marillac (a non-profit supporting troubled children).

Not only was it a nice event, it was for a great cause.  If you go to only 1 networking event next month, make it this one.

It's on the 3rd Tuesday of every month and you can sign up for an invitation here.

If you have questions you can also contact Brian Pauls at Per Aspera, Stephen Heiner at Get Smarter, or Pat McGinnis at Speedpro Imaging

Break Even Analysis 101
How much Money How much money do you want?

How much money do you need?

As a new business owner, a big part of my ongoing experience and planning center around money.  Admittedly money isn't the reason I got into this (I'll save that for another topic) but it's always going to be a factor.

However, and I think this applies to everybody, money definitely plays a large part in determining the amount of success my business will have.  Which brings us back to the starting point:

How much money do you need?  How much money do you want?

Now there's a philosophical aspect to this question that ties into living within your means and that kind of stuff,  but right now I'm thinking of the more tactical and practical viewpoint of how to use break even analysis to drive all sorts of strategic planning.

Use this break even approach for strategic planning!

Chris Cakes New Restaurant
Pancakes....yum! A food and business review!

A lot of people around Kansas City have heard of Chris Cakes, they've been doing catering, special events and fund raisers for a long, long time and they are very popular.  They specialize in pancake breakfasts - usually tossing them to the customers with a lot of fun banter.

They recently opened a new restaurant concept about 4 blocks from my house and along with good food, they hit on some great business practices!

...What can a Pancake House teach you about business?

As of about a year ago, a study was done (State of the Blogosphere) by David Sifry of Technorati that indicated there were more than 50 Million blogs published and that number has doubled about every 6 months in the last 3 years.

Blogs are clearly a big part of the internet experience and any recent books on marketing and networking will suggest you should have a blog as a major contact point to customers, employees and colleagues.

A big contribution to that growth is Wordpress.com, an open source blogging platform that is easy to use but also has a tremendous amount of flexibility if you're willing to learn just a few things.  I've by no means mastered the technology, but it's really not hard - whether you host it yourself and it's even easier if Wordpress hosts it for you.  It's actually a lot of fun.  Check out my blog here and let me know what you think.

Once Soundtrack Music and Film:  Once Soundtrack

I'm more of a summer blockbuster kind of movie goer than the 'Indie Art Film', but I'd heard all sorts of great things about Once (and there really wasn't anything else on that we wanted to see last weekend).  The long and the short of it was that the movie was fine - lots of interesting perspectives on music and living in Dublin, but not a whole lot of story.  That's probably just my lack of Indie Art appreciation.

However, the soundtrack is brilliant!!!  I would describe it as alternative folk rock with a lot of heartfelt lyrics and beautiful chords.  It's very stripped down with only the 2 leads singing and limited instruments, but there is a lot of passion and emotion.

Run out and get this soundtrack!
